As a major design subconsultant to David Evans and Associates (DEA), Harris Kocher Smith (HKS) provided the following services to the RTD FasTracks West Corridor LRT Design Project:
Utilities
HKS was responsible for the design and coordination of all utilities impacted by the RTD West Corridor Project. The project included the design and coordination for new sanitary and water facilities for the LRT stations along the corridor. In addition, extensive coordination with numerous dry utility companies, Denver Water and various water and sanitation districts along the corridor was required. The project team also targeted certain portions of the alignment for early work on storm drainage and utilities; therefore, separate packages were developed to comply with the needs of the contractor and RTD. All design and construction documents had to comply with FTA requirements as well as utility owner criteria.
Miscellaneous Engineering Services
HKS provided miscellaneous engineering services to DEA for the project which included the following:
- Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) – HKS provided QA/QC assistance to DEA on 90% and final construction document packages.
- Miscellaneous Design – HKS provided miscellaneous civil and roadway design assistance to DEA. Design included at-grade roadway design of track crossings, intersection design, design alternatives evaluation, etc.
- Construction Observation – HKS provided construction observation for the construction of the 2030 linear foot Richey Park CBC. This work involved making physical inspections of the construction of the pre-cast concrete culvert joints to ensure that construction tolerances were met. Daily logs of construction activities were recorded and submitted to RTD and City of Lakewood.
Surveying
HKS’s survey department provided design surveys to DEA for the West Corridor LRT Project. The corridor is 12.1 miles long commencing at the light rail station in downtown Denver and extending westerly along the existing rail corridor and along W. 6th Avenue terminating at the Jefferson County Municipal Building. The design surveys included the establishment of horizontal and vertical control, topography, rights-of-way and property line determination and subsurface utility locations. HKS also aided DEA in the preparation of legal descriptions and exhibits for rights-of-way and easement acquisitions and dedications throughout the corridor.
