HKS was responsible for upgrading the storm sewer at the University of Colorado’s Boulder Campus through the southwest quad. This project entailed using the flowrates from a drainage master plan and laying out the storm sewer to minimize the impacts to existing infrastructure.
The layout for the storm sewer starts northeast of Broadway by the Economics Building. It then proceeds to the east between various buildings, including Ekeley Sciences, Cristol Chemistry, and finally to its terminus near the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts building.
On the campus there are numerous existing utilities, which had to be potholed, including a water main, a steam tunnel and a gas line. Other obstacles included trees, light poles, flagstone steps, electrical ducts and sanitary lines.
HKS developed the layout for the storm sewer and completed the final design for the recommended storm sewer improvements. The final design included connecting the roof drains to area inlets at low points in grass areas and providing area and curb opening inlets in paved areas. Storm sewer was also added to the Mary Rippon Theatre and the grass areas around the Education Building. The storm sewer outfalls to an existing storm sewer that eventually joins a storm sewer system in 18th Street.
